Top 5 tips for living with a life-long ‘invisible’ illness – Crohn’s Disease

Be kind to yourself!

  1. TRUST
    • Make a list of the most important people in your life who you trust, respect and feel safe with. This can be one or two people or as many as you would like. Keep this list safe and remember to share with them what you are going through. These people want to support you but might be worried about asking too many questions for fear of causing embarrassment. If you are comfortable enough to share your journey with them, they will relax and feel more confident to offer their support.
  2. LEARN
    • Find out as much as you can about your condition, talk to your doctors and Inflammatory Bowel Disease nurses and specialists to gain as much knowledge as you can, this will eliminate some aspects of the unknown which leads to fear. I also recommend becoming a member of the UK’s leading charity, Crohn’s and Colitis UK which is a fantastic source of information as well as support.
  3. OBSERVE
    • Monitor your diet so you know what triggers your condition so that you can prepare accordingly and avoid things that cause pain or other symptoms. My Fitness Pal app is a great way of tracking what you’re eating as well as tracking nutrition, exercise and weight.
  4. STRENGTH
    • Engage in exercise – whatever you can include every day no matter how little, exercise in any form will release endorphins and will enable the heart to pump oxygen around your body making you feel alive.
  5. TIME
    • Find time to include a mindful practice into your daily routine. This can be any form of meditation or simply listening to inspiring music. You may wish to do yoga which works out the body at the same time. During this time, think about 3 things you are grateful for. Now picture your younger self in your mind...what you would like to tell him / her that you are proud of...write as many things down as you wish and read every day.
